The valley got its name in 1849 from immigrants who wanted stabbing the valley over on the way to gold. Some prospectors lost their way and were afraid to perish. It was decided to split the group. One group did not survive. A woman from the group of survivors would when she left the valley, have turned around and said, "Goodbye, Death Valley." Here the valley would have its name
