Het door de deurpost half zichtbare tafelblad werd overwoekerd door boeken. Boven op de stapels lag een geopend exemplaar. Er stonden enige stoelen en een fauteuil, vlakbij een open haard. Het vale vloerkleed met geometrische vormen reikte tot aan de drempel.
Ik liep verder. Een steile trap voerde naar boven; vele traptreden waren uitgesleten.
