We sloegen een kampement op in de grot en begonnen de wanden te inspecteren. Na enige dagen zoeken hadden we geluk. De verhalen bleken waar geweest: er zat een rijke goudader. Met de meegenomen houwelen bikten we de goudhoudende rostblokken uit. Maar onze voedselvoorraad raakte op en we werden gedwongen naar beneden te gaan.
We hadden ons al voorbereid op een confrontatie met de Indianen, maar tot onze ontsteltenis vonden we slechts lijken, sommige lichamen lagen half in de rivier. De gehele troep van zo'n twintig krijgers was uitgemoord door pelsjagers.
Die stonden ons op te wachten bij een boshut.
We moesten de helft van de goud bevattende stenen afgeven.
